Number one. The first of these seven habits was to eat regularly. Researchers found that people who ate irregularly at different times and in different amounts throughout the day were far more likely to be constipated, fatigued, and have physical ailments than those who ate regularly.

Number two. The second habit is to eat lightly. Today, we know that foods high in fat, sugar, and salt are bad for us. The more you tilt your diet toward fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean sources of proteins plus lots of water, the better you will feel, the deeper your sleep, and the more energy and vitality you will have.

Number three. The third habit I also had to deal with is diet, which is not snacking between meals. When you snack between meals, introducing new food interrupts the ongoing digestive process and causes drowsiness, constipation, and improper digestion.

Number four. The fourth habit for longevity is not smoking. Smoking is detrimental to the entire human system that it causes more illnesses than other environmental or heredity factors. Researchers have identified at least 32 forms of diseases, including a variety of cancers caused or aggravated in some way by smoking. The very act of quitting smoking can do more to improve a person\’s overall health and any other single change in health habits.

Number five. The fifth habit identified in the Alameda study is moderate to no consumption of alcohol. This fairly narrow range suggests not more than one or two drinks per day. Fewer is better. The primary cause of premature death before the age of 40 is automobile accidents. As many as 50 percent of automobile accidents are alcohol-related. Therefore, cutting down or eliminating alcohol can contribute significantly toward ensuring that you live a long life.

Number six. The sixth habit identified is longevity, which is sleeping seven to eight hours every night; keeping properly rested is one of the most important things you can do. If you allow yourself to become overtired, your immune system begins to break down. As a result, you become susceptible to various illnesses, including colds, flu, and even pneumonia. Getting regular rest is one of the most important parts of keeping your physical life balanced.

Number seven. The seventh health habit identified in the Alameda study was regular exercise.
